the european group on ethics in science and new technologies (ege) has recently released an opinion aimed at raising awareness of a number of ethical dilemmas created by a range of ICT implants.
among other things, the opinion indicates that ethical awareness and analysis must take place now in order to ensure an appropriate and timely impact on the various technological applications. it also proposes clear ethical boundaries, legal principles and suggests several steps that should be taken by responsible regulators in europe.

there is something not right about Verichip here at Hackensack. I have asked some physicians if they knew about this technology, ranging from Doctors in the ER, to physicians who are active in hospital policy. Many do not know about this.
Furthermore, if we simply used the dictation system like the way we should, there would be better records available for everyone. Why implant chips?
The part of the problem is the problem of polyresistant strains of bacteria prevalent in the United States (not posting any specific prevalance about any specific place) getting into those implants.
Posted a link over on my blog on this: I did mention the idea of a virtual advance directive to Dr. Feldman's secretary, but stated that if we did have something, it would be via the open source agreement, and that my particular patients would wish to have a linux only software running inside their bodies.
